Certification Guide

Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) certification

You will receive an email directly from Scrum Alliance about certification. Check your spam folder if you don't see it.

The CSM exam contains 50 multiple choice questions, and it is timed at one hour. The passing score is 37 correct answers. You are allowed to take the exam 2 times, so you can think of your first time as a practice test. There is no official practice test, so any practice exams your find online may NOT accurately represent the actual Scrum Alliance exam.

CSM exam preparation

  1. Read the Scrum Guide and keep it open during the exam

  2. Read this outline of the CSM exam content

  3. Have your Agility11 course content handy to refer to during the exam

Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO®) certification

There is no exam to earn your CSPO® certification from Scrum Alliance. Your completion of the CSPO® training with full participation is sufficient to earn this certification.

Advanced CSPO® certification

To earn your A-CSPO, you must complete the A-CSPO training and have at least 12 months of job experience with the responsibilities of a Product Owner. Click here for details.

It is not necessary to have the job title of ‘Product Owner’ but you must have had the responsibilities of a PO. Your job experience must be within the past 5 years. You may also take the A-CSPO course first, and then earn your 12 months of work experience afterward. If you choose this option, then you will submit your work experience to Scrum Alliance when you complete it and then you will earn the A-CSPO certification.

Renewing your Scrum Alliance certifications

Your Scrum Alliance certification and membership are valid for 2 years. To renew your CSM or CSPO certification, you have 2 options:

  1. Complete 20 hours of continuing education (Scrum Education Units, or SEUs). See here for details. SEUs are self-reported in your Scrum Alliance account.

  2. Complete any of these Scrum Alliance courses: CSM, CSPO, Advanced CSM®, Advanced CSPO, or Certified Agile Leader 1®. Any of these courses will earn the new certification AND will renew your other Scrum Alliance certifications for 2 years.
